Kamlendra Kanwar has had a long and eventful journalistic career spanning four decades which included stints as Resident Editor of the Indian Express in Mumbai, Hyderabad and New Delhi , Editor of The Times of India’s Ahmedabad edition, Senior Associate Editor of The Tribune in Chandigarh, Editor of the New Indian Express in Chennai for seven years and Grade A Journalist of the New Straits Times in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, among other assignments.
Kanwar’s foray into journalism began as a student when he took the initiative to launch a thought-provoking journal ‘Pulse of Youth’ which made waves across the country. After post-graduating in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, Kanwar plunged into full-time journalism with a stint in the crusading Everyman’s weekly of Jayaprakash Narayan for which he wrote a regular economic column.
When Emergency came, Everyman’s was ordered closed. Kanwar then moved to Indian Express at Delhi and three years later to The Statesman on the desk.
After a fruitful stint there, Kanwar was chosen to work in Kuala Lumpur with the New Straits Times on a two-year contract.
Back in New Delhi in early 1983, Kanwar joined UNI as a Financial Correspondent covering Parliament and Economic ministries. He was also involved in teaching students of journalism on a part-time basis at several places during his long career.
In 1984 at age 34, Kanwar got his first break as Resident Editor. This was with Free Press Journal’s Indore edition which he transformed into a lively, well-accepted paper.
He was back with the Express three years later, first as Editor of its Andhra editions based at Hyderabad and then in Bombay as Editor of the flagship edition for five eventful years. This was a period of prolific writing-edits, commentaries and interviews.
He was transferred to Delhi as Senior Editor of Express but returned to Mumbai a year later as Head of Corporate Communications in Standard Chartered Bank during a challenging phase.
Missing the rough and tumble of journalism, Kanwar returned to the profession as Editor of The Times of India at Ahmedabad where he served for four years before returning to the Express-this time The New Indian Express at Chennai in early 2001 which assignment he handled with distinction for seven years.
Thereafter, he was with the Tribune in Chandigarh as Senior Associate Editor for four years from where he retired in 2012. Upon retirement he plunged into freelancing, writing for a host of newspapers and websites.
Kanwar has been a politico-economic analyst of long standing. He has also written three books-one on Indo-Japanese relations in the wake of liberalization, another ‘Icons of Gujarat Industry—Stories of rare grit and enterprise’ and a third on ‘Trailblazers of Gujarat’ which were very well received. He also did many research-based studies for the Ahmedabad Management Association.
Kanwar has travelled widely-on invitations from governments abroad including the US, Germany and Japan, was as a member of the Prime Minister’s media group first with Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee and then with Dr Manmohan Singh on overseas trips.
